Brian Barso – PoppyBelleDreams and the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust

PoppyBelleDreams is a charity recently founded by Brian Barso, named for his daughter Poppy Belle who was one of the eighty or so children in the UK each year diagnosed with a rare form of childhood eye cancer called retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the retina, or light-sensitive lining of the eye, which is almost always diagnosed in children under the age of five. There are a variety of treatments available for sufferers of retinoblastoma which are highly effective. More than nine in ten cases are fully cured (98%). As with all forms of cancer, however, the treatments themselves can be highly traumatic and in some cases painful, with a number of side effects which can continue into adulthood. PoppyBelleDreams aims to raise funds to help send the families of affected children away together after treatment for a prolonged period of total rest and recuperation and to be able to spend quality time together away from doctors and hospitals. PoppyBelleDreams hopes to be able to begin receiving donations later on this year.

Baby Blue EyeBrian Barso and his family were helped through their own ordeal by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, or CHECT, which provides information and both practical and emotional support to families and raises funds for research into causes and future treatments of retinoblastoma. CHECT has been a registered charity since 1987, and was formerly known as the Retinoblastoma Society. The charity campaigns to raise awareness of the disease and to optimise treatment procedures for the benefit of patients and their families. CHECT is the only UK charity dedicated to providing support to sufferers of retinoblastoma and their families, helping them get through diagnosis, treatment and aftercare programmes without fear. One of the services which CHECT provides is putting parents of retinoblastoma sufferers in contact with each other, forming an ongoing support network of people who understand the ordeal.

CHECT have support workers which can be contacted by phone, email or even social networking sites, making it easy for children and parents alike to talk through any issues they may have and receive helpful advice at any stage of treatment. PoppyBelleDreams will offer the opportunity to get away from retinoblastoma after treatment and to take the time needed to rest and recuperate together as a family.
